Behind the lens
..and what does when at ouen mean?
I grew up landlocked in Germany. Yet, some of my earliest memories speak of a deeply rooted love for the ocean that I think I was born with, and that would impact hugely on the choices made in my life.
Advocating for ocean conservation by expressing this awe for the marine world and its curiously wonderful inhabitants is a crucial part of my personal journey of wanting to live true to myself and my values.
Writing, to me, has always been a creative outlet through which I reflect upon, and process the world around me. Over time, exploring others‘ stories has also helped me find my own voice in ocean conservation.
By telling the emotive stories behind what drives those in the field, I hope to not only help foster a connection to the underwater world, but also between us as humans.
When at ouen is simultaneously a loving nod to the parish of St Ouen, my chosen home in the island of Jersey where I wrote and published my first article, as much as it is a reflection of the sense of peace and connection the ocean provides me with, a feeling of being, if you‘d like, at one.
